It effectively plays like a VN with a lot of stat checks that influence %chance of success for the actions you take, options you choose, etc. There's no goals set for you to achieve, you forge your own path. It doesn't really allow you to be railroaded into irl history either, it is far too random for this to happen as the other anon said

Do whatever you want? You can conquer all of Europe and change the religion or just play as a vassal as part of a larger empire. I do think that people who aren't into medieval history at all aren't gonna get much from this game. It's kinda the whole point.

I found endless enjoyment from these games with autistic alternative history roleplaying.

I was thinking the same, now I have more than 600 hours in it.

are there any good complete setting overhaul mods that make this game worth playing or is Ck2 still better for that?

This game is only fun for a while
They basically haven't added new complex mechanics since it came out so every run is the same with the same event spam over and over. The dlcs are a bit meh for the most part, only the tournament dlc is good. I don't understand why they haven't added republics, societies or nomads like in ck2 yet. For how pricey the dlcs are, you would expect them to be somewhat big but nope.
The mod scene is a bit impressive though, I have way too many hours in vanilla so maybe that's why I felt burnt out. I should try installing a frickton of mods one of these days.

You're supposed to import all the dwarves into Switzerland and create a Mountain Dwarf Kingdom. Create a new religion hostile to Christianity and defend your mountain holds from all comers.
