Advanced carbon management technologies are needed to tackle hard-to-abate emissions and although there are challenges, solar and wind transitions can provide lessons to accelerate development. Innovative financial strategies and market-driven approaches are critical for overcoming initial commercialization hurdles in carbon management. A longer-term view on return will make sustainable investments in clean infrastructure viable, with a new perspective on the so-called “green premium.” via World Economic Forum

Improvements in energy efficiency are a critical component in our quest to reach net zero by 2050. While rapid technological advances suggest the transformation is possible, we must also direct efforts to overcome the many challenges – from financial to behavioral – that remain, write Climateworks Centre experts Dr Emi Gui and Gill Armstrong PhD for SDG Action.

Pleasure to write for SDG Action again in the lead up to #cop28 in Dubai! To achieve #netzero, #energyefficiency must be improvedthroughout the whole energy supply chain in generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as from the demand side. Measures include:- Ramping up generation efficiency through technology and innovation, with more efficient solar cells and panels, wind turbines, development of the most productive sites for renewable energy, and increased grid flexibility for better utilization of renewable energy with more energy storage or smart grids- Optimizing spatial planning to improve production and cost efficiencies by sharing sites, grid connection, and high-voltage transmission lines, and the co-location of hydro-floating solar, wind and solar storage technologies, or other hybrid technologies, including nuclear and geothermal. - Reducing transmission and distribution (T&D) losses, and enhance grid connectivity- New technologies or process improvements to decarbonise hard-to-abate industrial sectors, such as LC3 (limestone calcinated clay cement)- Minimum mandatory standards, energy ratings, improved business models and financing solutions for better demand-side energy efficiency and building efficiencyHarmonizing both #energyefficiency and #renewableenergy is essential for the world to achieve both #sdg7 (affordable and clean energy) and #sdg13 (climate action). We need urgent and effective decision-making and wide-scale behaviour change to incentivise the adoption of energy efficiency solutions and practices to achieve net zero by mid-century. In a recent Utility Dive piece, Ayelet Hines quite effectively captures some of the tension points of the clean energy transition that aren't as popular to discuss, but nonetheless need to be acknowledged. Those who want the transition to succeed, need to give space for companies who are trying, and at the same time, all parties need to come to the table clear-eyed on the political landscape in which they are engaging. This means meeting local leaders where they are, and connecting through emotion first. As she states, "We must stop pretending that humans are rational creatures who work off detailed fact sheets. The research is in: humans are emotional creatures first, rational creatures second.... we must fill the communications vacuum first, with framing that connects at an emotional level, delivered by culturally credible messengers." #cleanenergytransition #stakeholderengagement #renewableenergyhttps://lnkd.in/ejAp-rsK

https://lnkd.in/ekX6daQhCouldn’t agree more with this sentiment - “what can we do to get started today?” is the question at the heart of every strategy at Carbon Capture Scotland and one that Richard Nimmons and I have always asked since the beginning. We are talking about true net removals of CO2 from our atmosphere whilst additionally prioritising the use of clean renewable energy to decarbonise our energy systems.
